Hi, there is this post attempting to discredit another tumblr post going around. What Nicolas Steenhout is saying is merely his opinion rather than the law and in some instances he is outright lying. This misinformation spreading about service dogs has the potential to harm many service dog teams who may be accused of being fakes. Just to note this is about service dogs in the USA only.

@mariagvogel. This isn’t to single you out, just that you’re the person who cross posted this from twitter and that you mentioned not having enough knowledge on service dogs to form a proper opinion.

I’d first like to address the lies of Steenhout’s posts. @lumpatronics is a grown woman, not a teenager, and is working with a professional dog trainer. When the incident took place lumpatronics was in a grocery store when she tripped and dropped Raider’s (her service dog) leash. Raider was found an aisle over, not 2 blocks away, and was not pawing the woman. Raider is still working as a service dog and was never deemed inappropriate as a service dog (doh!).

With that out of the way I’d like to further explain what a service dog is. This is taken directly from ada.gov: Under the ADA, a service animal is defined as a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The task(s) performed by the dog must be directly related to the person’s disability. There is no list of official tasks or how the dog must perform them. As long as it’s a trained behaviour that mitigates the handler’s disability, it counts. To give you an idea of some tasks a dog might perform here is a list of 143 of them thought the dog only needs to know one task and it’s not limited to that list. You’ll see ‘alert for help’ is on that list.

Each service dog is uniquely tailored to their handler’s needs. What might work with one service dog team won’t necessarily work for another. Steenhout’s example of the dog staying with their handler and barking to alert others would not work for lumpatronics because she has sensory issues and would be sent into sensory overload from the barking while recovering from her seizure. A dog being trained to find help is a perfectly valid and legal task that isn’t unheard of in seizure response dogs.

Service dogs are required to be leashed unless the leash interferes with one’s disability or performing a task. From ada.gov: Under the ADA, service animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered, unless these devices interfere with the service animal’s work or the individual’s disability prevents using these devices. In that case, the individual must maintain control of the animal through voice, signal, or other effective controls. Since Raider was tasking he was considered under other effective control.

While service dogs are not legally required to wear a vest that does not mean vests are a scam. Some service dog handlers choose to utilize a vest some don’t. Registries are a scam but just somebody registered their dog with one doesn’t necessarily mean the dog is a fake service dog. The handler may have simply not have known better. As far as I’m aware Raider is not registered as a service dog so I’m not sure why it was brought up.

Other things to note is that while Labradors, Golden Retreivers, Poodles, and mixes of the 3 are the most commonly seen as service dogs, there is no restriction on what breeds are allowed to be service dogs (Q22). It is also not legally required for the dog to be professionally trained and handlers with owner trained dogs have just as many rights as handlers with organization trained dogs (Q5). There is no restrictions on where the dog comes from or what age it is either. Breeder, rescue, or the family dog are all valid choices if the dog has the right temperament for service dog work.

The best thing to do if you see a service dog team is to ignore the dog. I hear a lot of people say that while they don’t pat service dogs they always make sure to tell the dog’s handler how the dog is doing a good job. While it’s coming from a good place I know a lot of handlers would prefer you didn’t. They are just trying to go through their day like anybody else but usually get stopped because of their dogs. Service dogs are medical equipment. You wouldn’t stop somebody to tell them their cane, wheelchair, oxygen tank, etc, is doing a good job, would you?

This is longer than I intended and their was more things I wanted to add but I’m having a hard time remembering them and I’m running out of energy for this. I hope what I’ve said makes sense and that I’ve educated a few people about service dogs. I’m sure there are others but these are the only ones that have come across my dash. Thousands of years ago, somebody looked at a flock of sheep and went, “well, they aren’t cold.”

It’s so much better than that.

So once upon a time, goats and sheep were essentially the same animal, and all of them had hair. Now, you can do some stuff with hair, but you can’t do a lot, so mostly sheep/goats were kept for meat and milk.

Except then a mutation showed up, and some of the sheep/goats had WOOL instead. And someone realized that 1. you could spin that shit, and 2. then you could WEAVE that shit, and 3. IT GREW BACK.

Generations of selective breeding ensued. Two visibly discrete species emerged, one primarily for meat and milk, and the other primarily for wool. They also have different behavioural characteristics, because independence was not helpful in a sheep, so it was bred out of them. Sheep remain one of the few non-draft animals that we farm even though they are not delicious.

The most similar part of sheep and goats that remains today is their skeleton. On an archaeological dig, you find THOUSANDS of bones and bone fragments that can only be identified as “sheep/goat”. It’s incredibly frustrating, but also kind of hilarious after you’ve spent enough time in the sun.

ANYWAY, human beings have always been smart and surprisingly good at changing nature because they want a sweater.

listen i don’t know if this was the original point of the piece but this is literally one of the most powerful images I’ve seen in relation to female artists and sexuality

it is a HUGE issue to get modern art historians to recognize historical lgbtq+ artists, especially women. A female artist could have never married, spent time with other publicly lgbt figures, and been living with a female partner for most of their lives, and yet you still get art historians who will jokingly be like “I guess that makes them a lesbian right? haha!” um yeah, professor janet, it does, and it’s not a joke

with that context, this piece gains an incredible amount of depth. I could write a full ten page paper on this piece alone. This is a self portrait (which beautifully and ironically emulates classic Renaissance formula) says “I am an artist, and I’m gay” in a way that by definition cannot be removed or questioned. Power move indeed, holy shit

This is quite possibly the best modernist take on Renaissance art I’ve seen in years. Not only is everything is this picture perfect (posture, lighting, those cat eyes) but it emulates this beauty:

Now you may ask, who the fuck is fucking Judith Leyster?

She is one of 2 famous female Renaissance artists ie. women who were never covered up as being active artists because of their sex (second is Artemesia Gentileshi, she was a badass from Italy who was a favourite of the Medici family and did a series of self-portraits where she beheads her rapist, seriously Google this woman she’s amazing) and is one of a trio of women who reigned artist supreme in the Dutch Golden Age. Judith was from Haarlem and was part of a brewer family, so had no artistic background, yet somehow managed to gain the attention of painter Franz Pietersz de Grebber (who was a pretty big deal at the time) and entered his workshop. She was so good she was written into a book and ran her own workshop, the second woman to ever be accepted into the Guild in Haarlem. Within 2 years she had 3 apprentices and only punched out between 12-35 works in 6 years, yet went on to be one of the most popular painters of the time. After her death in 1660 most people forgot about her until one of her pieces was rediscovered in the late 1800′s after a serious of mistaken authorship.

She was so badass in establishing herself as an independent female artist, she helped pave the way for other female artists from then on to get a foothold in the field. After her rediscovery, her works influenced women from the Impressionist, Expressionist and Modernist age (which is really when women were finally being acknowledged as artists globally) and her pieces are still being hunted down.

So, not only is this photo Post-Modern and LGBTQ+ (brava babe :) ) but it’s also feminist as fuck and deserves a double thumbs up!

Well, you should know that the same rule goes for any kind of customer service survey. Unless they service you received was unacceptable, give them 5/5 or 10/10 or whatever. It’s annoying, because it ruins the sensitivity of the survey, but it’s how it’s gotta be. 9/10 gets treated like a problem and 6/10 gets treated like a disaster. Understand this and do the workers a favor by grading easy.

Really I can’t recommend this enough. It also does a good job looking at what its like for a grown adult to be in his child body again, dealing with knowing his future wife as a kid and realizing that she’s not going to be the same person again. And doing a, decent job, handling that. And schoolgirl crushes as well.

I want to tell y’all a story about supporting and loving your partner, starring my amazing wife.

I’ve mentioned before that I had an eating disorder for many years, and though I consider myself “recovered” there are aspects of my disorder that I still struggle with today — being quite a bit heavier than my wife is one of them.

When my wife and I moved in together back when we were still girlfriends, I was at my skinniest. She used to pick me up all the time and lift me off the ground, and I’d laugh and kick out my legs ‘cause I was just delighted to have her holding me.

But I started gaining weight as I went through recovery, and where once we were pretty close in size, I began to get bigger. And bigger. And bigger. And she remained her naturally petite self. I began to almost dread when she’d try to pick me up, sure that this time she wouldn’t be able to get me off the ground.

But every time, even if I protested, she’d lift me up and say something like: “See, you’re not so big that I can’t lift you!”

And one time I just blurted out: “But someday I’m going to be so fat you won’t be able to.”

She looked me dead in the eye and said: “No you won’t. Because if that ever happens, I’ll start working out.”

It was the best possible thing she could have said to me, because she wasn’t saying I wasn’t going to get fat — neither of us knew that for sure. She was just saying that I was never going to be “too fat” for her.

And every time I worry about getting bigger, I remember that I’ll never be so big that she can’t lift me, because baby knows how much I love being held, and she’ll change her own habits to ensure that I never feel “too big” or “too heavy” because in her eyes I’ll never be “too” anything.

Anyway, there’s a moral to this story: Find yourself a partner who will never consider you an excess. You should never be “too much” to someone who loves you — too big, too loud, too passionate, too awkward, whatever your “too” happens to be. And even as you change and grow (in my case, literally), the right person will be there through the changes, to tell you that you’re always just right for them.
